Course 4 - Practicum

Apply your new knowledge and skills gained from course work and your professional experience to conduct a development audit for a local nonprofit.  Students will still meet weekly to discuss topics important to fundraising professionals such as management, ethics, boards, consultants, career building skills and emerging trends. In addition to your practicum work and classes you’ll paired with a mentor to help support you in the practicum, help you prepare for your capstone presentation, and to complete your portfolio. 

After this module, you will be better able to:
  • Understand the management challenges facing development professionals and how to manage up and down your organization’s infrastructure
  • Understand how to manage relationships with key organization volunteers and Board members
  • Have basic knowledge of key emerging trends in nonprofit funding (b-corps, venture philanthropy, the triple bottom line, social entrepreneurs, earned income, social media fundraising,  etc)
  • Understand the role of consultants in fundraising
  • Be able to articulate your key areas of interest and focus in the fundraising arena and where you want to go in the next five years in your career
After this module, you will have completed the coursework for the Fundraising Management Certificate.

You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge by:
  • Presenting your portfolio of work to your mentor and at least one Advisory Board Member for their review and feedback
  • Creating a comprehensive development audit and analysis report of a local nonprofit organization
  • Giving an oral and written presentation of your audit to the core instructors, advisory board members, program mentors, and nonprofit representatives

Sally Dadmun Bixby, MAT

Not long after receiving her Master's in teaching degree Sally discovered her love for philanthropy, and in 1988 she began working in the nonprofit sector. Her experience over the past 20 years includes working with organizations serving children, the arts, environmental causes, social services, healthcare, housing, and more.  Sally is an experienced speaker and presenter at workshops and seminars on nonprofit fund development and management. As a consultant, she combines her skills as a teacher, manager, and proven fundraiser to help others build successful, sustainable development programs.
